Benjamin Britten: War Requiem                         (Chinese Premiere)

Composed by Britten in 1962, the War Requiem was commissioned to mark the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral rebuilt on the war ruins. It stands out among all the musical compositions in 20th century with its unusual large scale and vast magnificence. The work was scored for soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists, chorus, boys’ chorus, organ, and a hugely organized orchestra. The lyrics were taken from Wilfred Owen’s poems condemning the WWI and the traditional Latin Mass texts. The British composer Britten had taken a dominant place in the history of Western opera art and was regarded as the only master in British opera. It is of great significance that Shanghai Symphony Orchestra with the 40-year-old choral ensemble--London Voices will perform this splendid work to mark his centenary.
